Waldex, a semiconductor materials and components company that started and grew in Gumi, is building a large-scale production facility in the Gumi National 5 Industrial Complex.

Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gumi City, and Waldex signed an investment memorandum of understanding to expand semiconductor material and component production facilities at Gumi City Hall on July 23.

Waldex plans to invest a total of 260 billion won by 2030 and hire more than 370 new employees.

## New semiconductor parts factory established in Gumi National Industrial Complex 5

The new factory is scheduled to be built on a site of approximately 82,600 m2 in the Gumi National Industrial Complex 5.

The factory will produce key materials and components such as silicon, quartz, and fine ceramics used in the semiconductor etching process.

Waldex plans to purchase land starting in the second half of this year, begin construction in April 2027, and operate the first factory in 2028. Thereafter, further expansion is planned to be completed by 2030.

## Reinvestment in local companies founded in Gumi

Waldex is a local company in Gumi that started business in Gumi National Industrial Complex 4 in 2000.

We have been producing silicon electrodes, rings, and quartz components necessary in the semiconductor manufacturing process, and have recently been seeking to expand production capacity to respond to the recovery of the semiconductor market and increased demand for advanced semiconductors.

This agreement is evaluated as having great significance in that the company chose Gumi again as an investment destination rather than another region.

## 370 new jobs… What will be the impact on the local economy?

If the investment proceeds as planned, there is a possibility that new hiring will occur in various fields, including production, technical, and research and development personnel.

It can have a positive impact not only on direct employment but also on related industries such as factory construction, equipment installation, logistics, maintenance, and partner transactions.

In particular, as the lack of quality jobs is cited as one of the reasons why young people leave Gumi, attention is also being paid to how well this will lead to actual employment of local youth.

Gumi City expects that this investment will help expand youth employment, increase population, and strengthen the semiconductor materials and components industry ecosystem.

## An investment agreement does not directly mean employment

What was signed this time is an investment memorandum of understanding, or MOU.

Although the company has officially announced its investment plan and decided to cooperate with the local government, there are still several procedures remaining before the actual factory construction, operation, and hiring, including land purchase, permits, and market conditions.

Therefore, citizens need to keep checking not only the investment announcement itself but also the next steps.

* When the actual land purchase is completed
* Factory construction and operation schedule
* Whether to preferentially hire personnel from the Gumi region
* New recruitment occupations and qualifications
* Participation scale of local partners
* Whether the investment plan is implemented step by step

## Will this be a signal for the expansion of the Gumi semiconductor industry?

Gumi City is currently focusing its efforts on attracting semiconductor materials, components, and equipment companies and creating an industrial ecosystem.

If Waldex's new investment proceeds as planned, it could be a positive signal for revitalizing Gumi National Industrial Complex 5 and attracting additional semiconductor-related companies.

However, in order for the large-scale investment announcement to actually lead to jobs for citizens and revitalization of the local commercial district, continuous follow-up measures are needed from companies and Gumi City.

It appears that we will have to watch the future progress to see what changes the 260 billion won investment and 370 new hiring plans will bring to the Gumi economy.

What do you think of this Waldex investment news?

Do you expect it to be of practical help in youth employment and revitalization of the local economy in Gumi? Please leave your thoughts in the comments.

※ The investment amount, number of employees, and schedule may change depending on the investment process and company circumstances.
